Bernard de Marigny was a wealthy Louisiana French Creole planter and politician. At the age of fifteen, he inherited his father's plantation just below New Orleans city gates, east of Vieux CarreĢ. In order to pay his gambling debts, he began subdividing his plantation in 1806 to develop Faubourg Marigny, the first New Orleans suburb.
